Description
38 Caliber 150 grain TC FP Cowboy Action Shooting CAS Soft Cast Lead Bullets for Reloading.
SASS Single Action Shooting Society.
These soft cast bullets are some of the best cowboy action bullets made for reloading 38 special cowboy loads in a lever action. Similar to a 38 cal 147 gr TC cast bullet but weight balanced to 150 gr to improve accuracy.
This Soft Cast Lead Bullet is also excellent in 38 Special Revolvers for IDPA. When placed in a speed loader, the nose design reduces reload time during a match.
This bullet is a true 38 Caliber bullet, not a 9mm bullet being sold as a 38. It has a Truncated Cone Flat Point with improved bearing radius to provide excellent feeding in all lever actions. This bullet has been specifically designed by Stateline Bullets and is not sold anywhere else. Advanced competition customers are reporting they are beating their own best times by utilizing this bullet in their lever actions and IDPA 38 Special revolvers with speed loaders. This cast bullet qualifies for free shipping see details below. CAS, SASS, IDPA

What is the OAL of a 38 Special with our 150 grain TC Cowboy Action Bullet?

The OAL is approximately 1.505″ when seated to the crimp groove. Most “slicked-up” lever action rifles require a 38 Special Cartridge OAL of around 1.5″ to function properly. This cast bullet meets those requirements.

Stateline did a great job on these bullets. They were at my door within 3 days of placing my order. They arrived well packed and in good shape. They measured right at .358″ as advertised. This batch weighed in at 153 grains, according to my antique balance scale.
I loaded up a couple of dozen .38 special rounds right away, just to test them out. They loaded easily with a light roll crimp, just enough to make a smooth transition between bullet and brass for my lever rifle. I used 3.4 grain of Alliant Promo powder (same as Red Dot), with Winchester brass that has been loaded at least 10 times before. Primers were Winchester SP. This load is published on Alliant’s web site with a 158 grain semi-wadcutter bullet.
My finished cartridges chambered perfectly in my Ruger New Vaquero revolver, and cycled 100% in my Rossi ’92 Winchester replica. That says a lot for these cowboy bullets, as my rifle is very picky about cycling .38 special cartridges.
At the range these soft bullets proved to be consistent in velocity and more than adequate for plinking at a 3″ round rock with the rifle as well as the revolver. I have not had a chance to test them for groups. I expect good results.
Velocities with these low-pressure rounds averaged 755 fps for 7 shots through my 5.5″ barrel, with a 29.1 fps spread and a standard deviation of 11.2. Alliant’s published velocity for this load is 793 fps through a 6″ test barrel. As for my Rossi ’92, velocity averaged 935 fps for 5 shots through the 20″ tube, with a spread of 22 fps and standard deviation of 10.7.
As expected, there was no leading at all in my bores with this small sample. I do not know the exact pressure of my load, but I would guess it is between 12,000 and 14,000 psi. I tried a few rounds of another load with 3.3 grains of Promo, but it was not as consistent in velocity as the 3.4 grain load. Several popular powders will produce velocities up to 900 fps at relatively low pressures. I’m sure these bullets will work at those velocities, but I, personally, prefer a low-velocity round that stays subsonic in my rifle.
I will be buying more of these bullets, and watch for them when they are produced in 16 bnh in the future for even higher velocities. I look forward to many days of target shooting and hunting with this load. It promises to be a perfect subsonic squirrel round. Try some. I believe you’ll like them.

Low prices, fast shipping, and even a thank you written on the packing slip. I liked the simple and specific labels on the two calibers received (this one stated “low velocity only” ) as well as the brinell hardness of 9.5. Anyhow, these babies shot very, very well out of a S@W model 10, 4″. In fact, one of my best loads ever. These were run at 800 and 1000 fps. After shooting, I found a few bullets on the ground (a dirt mound was employed as my back-stop). Surprisingly, they demonstrated perfect terminal performance; very nice bullet upset, some with perfect mushrooming. Didn’t expect that, nonetheless, pleased. Especially since these were loaded primarily as a target load. A favorite bullet.

Love these bullets. They load great, shoot great and Jim and Rob are great people to deal with. You can’t go wrong with Stateline Bullets.

Perfect for .38 Short Colt! My wife is very recoil shy, so I loaded up some Stateline 150’s in .38 Short brass, and they are great. She keeps five of them loaded in her snub gun, and three speedloaders at the ready. 700 fps out of a .38 special 2″ barrel is a very nice load, and these bullets make good groups on bullseye targets as well as defense torso targets. Headshots at 10 yards are also impressive. I’ve got to place another order right away!

This is a great bullet for any Cowboy Action shooter, ran threw my 1873 and my Marlin smooth as can be no hesitation at all. Also in my area we shoot the Death Star and the plate rack with pistol and this is the perfect bullet, it has enough mass to take down the plates with minimal recoil. StateLine service and products are the best !

Jim C. said to try these in my .38 special Model 15 Smith. I’ll say they do shoot more accurately than the 125 grain round nose, reload easier into the cases, and are accurate enough I don’t need to try other bullets. Almost as accurate as my Hornady 148 grain wadcutters, which is saying something, but these I can use with a speedloader.

These 150 TCFP’s run amazingly well in my REALLY old Rossi 92 (very picky about a minimun OAL of 1.535 or a bit longer) and my 2 SAA clones. Ran just as well in the Girlfriends ’73 and SASS Vaqueros. 580 rounds at End of Trail this year and not a single mishap. Can’t ask for better!

I’ve been loading .38 caliber ammo for about 20 years. These are the best bullets I’ve run across. Because of their tapered shape, size, and weight, they cycle through extremely smoothly in my lever action rifles the best of any other bullets I’ve ever used. Also, these bullets have provided me with tighter groups on targets that makes shooting more fun!

This is my third purchase of the 150gr. .38 cowboy action bullets. I use these in my Benjamin Bulldog .357 PCP air rifle. The soft lead is excellent for this purpose. I remove the lube ring by soaking them in mineral spirits and resize to .357 diameter with my Lee resizer die and they are good to go. Thank You Stateline Bullets for a great product.
